Career Planning

Actively planning your career is essential if you are to reach your goals and achieve the success you hope for. Everyone should have a career plan and it should be something that you review regularly.

Generally it is considered that there are 4 stages to career planning.

  • Setting goals and objectives
  • Development of a strategy to meet these goals
  • Putting practices and activities in place to implement the strategy
  • Ongoing evaluation and modification if necessary

In setting goals you will firstly need to undertake a detailed self-analysis, of your existing skills and strengths. Asking friends or colleagues can be valuable, as often they can take a more objective view or even identify strengths you were not aware you had. From here you can start to set short, medium and long term goals, and also to identify where you may need additional training or study. Short term career goals may cover the next 1-2 years only and need to be specific and measurable, such as the position you wish to achieve. Medium term goals in your career should be around 5 years, and long term 10 years plus. Do not be afraid make long term goals and to aim high. You can always make amendments and review your plans as life changes.

Your strategy is likely to have many components. In the accounting world, qualifications are often essential, so put this high on your list. Then look to consider the position that you need to achieve in the short term that can lead to your long term goal. Whether you want to achieve partnership in a public practice, become a CFO or work as a Company Accountant, your short term goals should be seen as stepping stones to your long term goal.

When looking for that next career step it is important to consider whether you can achieve this with your existing company. Most employers will prefer to retain staff rather than hire new ones, so talk openly to your managers about your goals, and many times they will be able to assist you. Then consider your networks. Professional and social networking these days is essential and can be very valuable in your job search.
